Early Life of R. Kelly: From Chicago Streets to Music Dreams

R. Kelly was born and grew up in a society where poverty, crime, and violence were daily life chores. He was brought up by his mother in a single-parent household with his three siblings.

The concern for his father in his life was absent.

The environmental impacts and struggles of his childhood intensively influenced his psychological and emotional development.

Since childhood, he was very passionate about music and used to sing in church choir, inspired by his mother. He also used to participate in school musical events.

Academically he was below average because suffered from reading and writing difficulty which is known as dyslexia. In the mid-1980s,  when he was about 16 years old, he dropped out of Kenwood Academy High School due to the above-mentioned reasons.

Later in his life R. Kelly also revealed that in his childhood he was sexually assaulted by an older woman in his neighborhood which affected his relationship life.

Beginning of R. Kelly as a Music Legend

After leaving school he started performing on Chicago streets and subway stations.

In 1989, he formed a group with his friends known as MGM (Musically Gifted Men) which grabbed the attention of the masses for the first time in 1990  by winning a competition in talent show Big Break.

R. Kelly officially started his music career with Jive Records in 1991. He launched his very first debut album “Born into the 90’s”in 1992 which shot him to stardom and dominated him in the world of R&B.

After becoming the king of R&B royalty, R. Kelly grasped the attention of massive fans worldwide.

In November 1993, he launched his first solo album “12 Play”. This album hit feature “Bump n’ Grind” captured record-breaking commercial success and remained on the  Hot R&B billboards for 12 weeks as the number 1 hit feature.

R. Kelly had to leave the throne of R&B royalty, after allegations of sexual misconduct, pornography, and involvement in other unethical acts.

In the 1990s, he was accused of having sexual relationships with underage girls. Then in 1999, he married 15 years old singer Aaliyah but the marriage was quickly demolished by the court. After that in 2008, his video leaked in which he engaged in sexual misconduct with an underage girl. But the latter court freed him because they were unable to identify that video girl.

Anyhow, he persisted in his acts of brutality and did the same activities like controlling and manipulating women, harassment, physical and emotional abuse, and exploitation over and over again.

But when he launched his six-part series “Surviving R. Kelly”, included formal statements of victims to prove him innocent. It was his ultimate downfall. The fans distanced themselves from him and reopened his case. Finally, in 2019, he got arrested and remained in jail without bail, and in June 2023 he was charged with 30 years of jail.
