R. Kelly was born and grew up in a society where poverty, crime, and violence were daily life chores. He was brought up by his mother in a single-parent household with his three siblings.

The concern for his father in his life was absent.

The environmental impacts and struggles of his childhood intensively influenced his psychological and emotional development.

Since childhood, he was very passionate about music and used to sing in church choir, inspired by his mother. He also used to participate in school musical events.

After leaving school he started performing on Chicago streets and subway stations.
